As an undergraduate, I majored in studio art. I particularly enjoyed the three-dimensional arts. A pottery workshop at Arrowmont , Tennessee in 1972 with Charles Counts rekindled my love for clay. For ten years I worked full time producing a line of original, functional stoneware, mostly wheel thrown. My work included a range of many useful items such as vases, mugs, casseroles, hurricane lamps, honey pots, sugar and creamer sets, and dinnerware. In both Washington , D.C. and Belmont , Mass. , where I lived, I maintained a studio and sold my pottery at open houses and craft fairs.
Since moving to California in 1983, I have continued making functional pottery along with teaching art and ceramics. I have always loved making pieces that my family, friends and customers can use. Currently, I am working in porcelain and stoneware, firing at cone 6 in oxidation. I have begun using several new glazes which I am finding very exciting. My work is constructed using a combination of the wheel, slab roller and extruder. For many years I had a "fair weather" studio, and could only work in the summers. Since I taught full time, this was also when I had the time and energy to continue my work. Since completing an addition to my house and retiring from teaching, I now have a year round studio in which to work which I have been enthusiastically using. My work includes ceramic baskets, plates, bowls, platters, chip and dip sets, mugs, multifaceted sculptural vases, figure vase groups, pitcher and creamer sets, and a variety of ceramic serving trays.
Since 2006 I have been involved with the Moraga Art Gallery where I exhibit and sell my ware. I am also active in the Lamorinda Arts Alliance and participate in their Open Studios. My work can be seen at my Studio Gallery, at the Moraga Art Gallery, at the Valley Art Gallery and at various fairs and festivals. Moraga Art Gallery is open Noon to 5 p.m. every day but Monday. Please email me if you wish to set up an appointment to come to my Studio Gallery to see my work.
